Rooted in a tradition of social play, Okey is more than a game; it is a cultural ritual shaped by shared moments, strategy, and connection. Widely played across Turkey, it brings people together in cafés, homes, and gathering places, where the rhythm of the game becomes part of everyday life. This project reinterprets the familiar game through a contemporary design language, exploring how a deeply rooted cultural object can be transformed into a refined, collectible piece without losing its original spirit.
The design challenges the conventional construction of the Okey board by deconstructing its familiar form into two distinct elements: a timber playing surface and sculptural marble legs. Separating the board from its supporting structure creates a new relationship between function, proportion, and material, elevating an everyday object into a piece of furniture. The natural character of the materials remains central to the design, allowing the warmth and grain of timber to contrast with the weight, veining, and solidity of marble. The playing tiles continue this material dialogue, combining timber bodies with metal inlays that introduce precision, contrast, and a subtle sense of luxury.
Through the exploration of material possibilities and traditional craftsmanship, the project seeks to elevate a familiar Turkish pastime into a contemporary design object. Rather than disguising the materials, the design celebrates their inherent qualities, using contrast, tactility, and carefully considered construction to redefine the experience of play. The result is an object that exists between game and furniture, tradition and modernity, bringing a new level of material expression to a cherished social ritual.
