Inspired by the Bedouins’ traditional adaptation to the UAE’s desert climate, this project explores the Ghaf tree as a symbol of shelter, resilience, and community. Historically, the Ghaf tree has provided a place for Bedouins to rest beneath its dense evergreen canopy, sustained by deep roots that reach underground water sources. The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (DDCR) serves as a reference site for investigating groundwater conditions, waterhole locations, and plant density, while highlighting the importance of preserving Dubai’s natural inland ecosystems amid rapid urbanisation.
Conceived as a space for community interaction in Dubai Design District, the design creates an inviting, multi-sensory environment inspired by the region’s heritage. Its base follows the desert topography of the DDCR, while vertical sculptural elements emerge from existing waterhole locations, releasing a fine mist to form a hovering canopy reminiscent of the Ghaf tree. This porous, tactile installation creates a moving, cooling barrier that partially obscures views and transforms the atmosphere of its surroundings.
Integrated, lightweight, and movable seating modules allow the space to adapt to different activities, encouraging visitors to gather, exchange ideas, and connect beneath the misting canopy. By creating an immersive environment without rigid boundaries, the project reinterprets the traditional role of the Ghaf tree as a place of refuge and social interaction, paying tribute to the ancestral roots and natural heritage of the UAE.
