Inspired by the delicate tendrils of grapevines, the design explores the spiral as a continuous movement between material and form. Developed during the Uncorked summer workshop in Domaine de Boisbuchet France, led by Maria Blaisse, the project began with an open-ended exploration of cork and its material qualities.
Observing the spiralling tendrils of a vine in nature, this organic movement is translated into a process of making. Working directly with a sheet of cork, a continuous spiral is cut and wrapped around a hair bun, allowing the material itself to guide the form. Through this intuitive process, the cork evolves into a sculptural headpiece, emerging from the relationship between natural observation, material exploration and the body.
The spiral becomes both a formal language and an open-ended proposition. With no fixed beginning or end, it suggests a form that can extend, transform and take on different identities — from a hat to a body piece or a larger wearable structure. The project explores how an initial encounter with nature can lead to an authentic process of making, in which material and form continuously inform one another.
